The Gardens

A holiday getaway is about more than just the bed you sleep in…

It’s about the environment you wake up to. Whether you’re working remotely or enjoying a well-deserved break, our gardens at Quinta de Lagos provide the perfect space to restore, relax, and rejuvenate.

More than just a backdrop

We take immense pride in our stunning gardens, a defining feature that makes Quinta de Lagos not just special, but truly unique.

Offering the perfect blend of beauty, tranquility, and functionality, discover how each feature can elevate your stay.

  • Beautifully preserved with its original tiling and surrounded by landscaped gardens, our pool is the perfect spot to cool off and unwind. With a dedicated sun lounger for every guest, there’s no need to play towel wars here! (Fun fact: rumour has it our pool was the first in-ground pool in the west Algarve!)

  • A serene corner of the garden, with peaceful ponds and stunning greenery. Home to a family of terrapins and frogs—see if you can spot them before they retreat under the lilies! The perfect spot to settle down with your favourite book or practice your morning meditation.

  • For those looking to stay active during their stay, our 80m² shaded outdoor exercise area offers a private, quiet corner of the gardens to work out. Equipped with complimentary free weights and outdoor yoga mats, you’ll have everything you need right at your fingertips to get your sweat on.

  • At the bottom of the main gardens you’ll find a charming field home to our friendly goats, geese and chickens. Little ones love saying hello, making this the perfect family-friendly destination.

Environment & Sustainability

With a deep love for our gardens comes a strong commitment to protecting the environment that nurtures them.

The Algarve has been experiencing drought for nearly 10 years, so we have taken various steps to make our water use as efficient as possible. We’ve implemented water-controlled taps in all our properties and throughout the garden’s watering system. We also collect all the water from the estate and are currently in the process of installing a water recycling system, meaning every shower and hand wash feeds directly back into nourishing our gorgeous garden.

Throughout the estate, you’ll find indigenous and low-water-use plants, and we encourage wildflowers to grow to support local pollinator ecosystems. This means our gardens change with the seasons, boasting vibrant greens from autumn through spring, and transforming into a more arid landscape during the hot summer months.

Changing with the Seasons

At Quinta de Lagos, we prioritise sustainable landscaping and water conservation. The Algarve is a drought-prone region, and in line with council recommendations and seasonal water restrictions, we’ve spent the past three years planting low-water and indigenous species, while allowing grassy areas to grow seasonally.

As a result, the gardens take on a more golden hue in the summer months compared to the greener appearance of winter and spring. However, our seasonal gardens are carefully designed around native plants that thrive with minimal water, ensuring the landscape remains beautiful while shifting naturally with the seasons.

Here’s a guide to what you can expect throughout the year.

  • Cooler days, crisp nights, and mostly blue skies. The occasional rainfall turns the gardens green.

  • Spring in full bloom. This is when our gardens are at their most vibrant, bursting with colour and life. Spring is rainy season in Portugal, so whilst you will be treated with occasional blue skies and warmer temps, be prepared for heavy rainfall that may last a few days!

  • What we call our “Goldilocks months”—not too hot, not too cold. The gardens are lush and radiant in May thanks to last month’s rainfall, turning a more golden hue in June as we enter dry season. Enjoy long sunny days and refreshingly cool evenings. A perfect balance.

  • Peak summer brings high heat and non-stop sunshine. While the lawns may turn golden, our native plants continue to shine—think Mediterranean charm with a warm, arid beauty.

  • September often offers the best weather of the year. Warm, dry days, clear skies, and cooler evenings. The gardens are drier, but they still glow with rustic, late-summer elegance.

  • Mild and calm with bright days and the occasional rain. This seasonal refresh brings the gardens back to a lush green, offering a peaceful, rejuvenating atmosphere.
